Ravi Shankar told the audience on the Ramon Magsaysay Award
NDTV journalist Ravish Kumar has been selected for the Ramon Magsaysay Award this year.
Kumar, the managing editor of NDTV India, who has been with the company since 1996, is the only Indian among the five people to receive the award this year. Four others are Sway Win to a Myanmar-based journalist; Nilapjeet, the Angkhana of Thailand; Raymondo Pujante Cayabyab of the Philippines; And Kim Jong Ki of South Korea.
The citation for Kumar states that he has been honored for "exploiting journalism to give voice".
It stated, "In selecting Ravish Kumar to receive the 2019 Ramon Magsaysay Award, the Board of Trustees recognizes his unwavering commitment to a professional, ethical journalism of the highest standards; His moral courage in standing up for truth, integrity, and freedom; And his princely belief is that it is in giving the voice a full and honorable tone, bravely yet fully in power to tell the truth, that journalism caters to its nobles who aim to advance democracy. "
It also praised Kumar's style of journalism: “As an anchor, Ravish is calm, decisive and well-informed. He does not dominate his guests but allows them to express themselves. However, given the state of public discourse in the media and the country or calling on the highest officials to criticize, he was not bald; For this reason, he has been harassed and threatened by the harsh partiality of one type or another. "
It recognized his tenacity, stating, "Through all the crises and sufferings, Ravish remains steadfast in his effort to preserve and broaden the space for an important, socially responsible media..."
Ramon Magsaysay Award is considered one of the most prestigious awards in Asia.
Congratulating Kumar, NDTV founders Prannoy Roy and Radhika Roy said in a statement that everyone in the news network is "deeply happy and proud" and that "India is proud of Ravish and his journalism, not just NDTV".
