Before crossing the Wagah border, Pakistan stopped the Samjhauta Express and asked India to send its own contingent to send passengers across the international border. Meanwhile, there were also reports that more than 500 political activists and leaders were detained in Kashmir in view of the sanctions.
Here are 10 top events that unfolded throughout the day:
Prime Minister Narendra Modi addressed the nation in a 40-minute television address, explaining the reason behind Article 370 of the government. Modi said that abolishing Article 370 would usher in a new era of development in Jammu and Kashmir, while bifurcation would also help in enriching Ladakh as a separate union territory. He listed the government's plan to end corruption, atrocities and violence in Jammu and Kashmir. He also urged a wide range of industries to come and invest in Jammu and Kashmir. The Prime Minister also asked the nation to stand in support of the Kashmiris, saying that the sanctions would be lifted soon. He also requested filmmakers from Bollywood, Tollywood and other regional film industries to shoot films in the valley.
PM Modi also listed the benefits that citizens of Jammu and Kashmir will now enjoy. PM Modi said that there will be an immediate review of government employees and police in the state. They will now enjoy the same benefits as other government employees posted in other states of India. He also said that central laws and schemes will now benefit minority communities in Jammu and Kashmir. He also said how education would prosper in the state after the end of Article 370. PM Modi said that health and export industries will also flourish in the absence of Article 370.
During his entire speech, PM Modi mentioned Jammu and Kashmir 69 times and barely mentioned Pakistan. The Prime Minister's speech on Kashmir differed from his earlier speeches. He mentioned the word Vikas 19 times but only mentioned Pakistan five times, making it clear that this decision was taken in the best interests of the citizens of Jammu and Kashmir. PM Modi also avoided speaking about Congress during his speech. Meanwhile, PM Modi mentioned Ladakh about 28 times during his address to the nation.
PM Modi's speech may have dimmed the mood on today's developments around Kashmir, but Pakistan is trying to disrupt the decision of the Indian government. On Thursday, Pakistan clarified that it was not planning any military action in view of the move. However, Pakistan Foreign Minister Shah Mahmood Qureshi clarified that the country would review its decision against India if it "reconsiders" its actions in Kashmir. A day after Qureshi's remarks, Pakistan expelled the Indian High Commissioner as part of its decision to curtail diplomatic relations with India.
They are not everything. Pakistan had also stopped the Samjhauta Express just before the Wagah border and asked India to send its crew and run it. According to a Pakistani news channel, the country suspended Samjhauta Express in protest against India's move to remove Section 370. The Government of Pakistan did not inform India of its decision to suspend the special train. As a result, many passengers were stranded. Shortly thereafter, the Indian Railways sent an engine with three crew members to retrieve the train from Wagah. Earlier on Wednesday, Pakistan expelled Indian High Commissioner Ajay Bisaria, moments after it downgraded diplomatic relations with India over its decision to dissolve Article 370.
The Foreign Ministry of India retaliated strongly after Pakistan's decision to suspend bilateral relations following the government's move to end bilateral 370. India reprimanded Pakistan and accused it of presenting a shocking picture to the world. The Foreign Ministry said, "The reasons cited by Pakistan are not supported by the facts on the ground." India also added that the violation of Article 370 is an internal matter and asked not to interfere in it. The Ministry of External Affairs said, "The Constitution of India is always a sovereign matter and by implementing an alarmist view of the region, seeking to intervene in that jurisdiction will never succeed."

At least 300 people participated in the protests, while many of them were detained by security forces in the valley. On the other hand, large-scale celebrations were planned in Leh after Ladakh was declared a union territory.
As the government is trying to clarify its stand on abolishing Article 370, opposition parties remain critical of the move. Azad, who was repatriated from the Srinagar airport on Thursday, said, "The pice decker has taken anyone with you [you can buy it for anyone]".
